Why buying local is important.

I thought of this as our local businesses are promoting shop local for the holidays. In an era dominated by one-click shopping and global supply chains, the simple act of choosing a local store or vendor instead of a large online or national company might feel insignificant. But these small decisions have a large and measurable impact. Whether you are a consumer shopping or another business that is sourcing materials or supplies. When you buy products or goods locally, you aren't just getting a product; you are making an investment in the economic health and wellbeing of your local economy.
The biggest argument for shopping locally is the "local multiplier effect." When you spend money at a locally owned business, more of that money stays in the community instead of spending it with large online stores or large chain businesses. Independent businesses purchase goods and services from local businesses like accountants, print shops, food suppliers, or fabricators. They also employ local residents who, in turn, spend their wages locally. For every dollar spent at a local independent business 2 to 3 times more money re-circulates thru the local economy than a dollar spent at a non-local based business.
Local business is the backbone of job creation for the United States. According to the SBA, small business accounts for large percentage of job creation annually, about 64%. Shopping locally helps these businesses thrive and supports your neighbors.
Local business owners often have a vested interest in the well-being of their community. They are your neighbors and are more likely to donate to local charities, sponsor youth sports, and contribute to school fundraisers than large corporations with distant headquarters. When local businesses thrive, it is a win for overall community health.
So, keep in mind that your spending power helps determine the kind of community that you will live in. While the global marketplace is tempting and convenient, buying local is a smart investment.
